Storm downed cedar carved out to form a canoe, pushed along
downstream
upon the current of the river, the native American Indian called,
Striped
Water, "where the waters come together."
Today that river is called, The Stuck, or Stuck River. Up stream it is
the White River.

Background -
Striped Water Poets began as the Living Room of the Spoken Word Lab. The
Living Room began in 1994 with the Spoken Word Lab founded by Paul
Nelson and Danika Dinsmore, in 1996. The Living Room was often
simply referred to as SPLAB.
SPLAB had been the sponsor of the long running Super-Bowl of Poetry
which usually was on Super Bowl Sunday. In June of 2006 SPLAB became a
new entity with a new name, Striped Water Poets. Striped Water Poets is
under the direction of Gerald McBreen.
~~~~~ Auburn ~~~~~
Auburn, hometown of Striped Water Poets, was
originally incorporated as Slaughter in 1891 in honor of General W. A.
Slaughter. With a slaughter house in town the name quickly took on
double meanings. In 1893 the name was changed to Auburn, taken from
"Sweet Auburn, loveliest village of the plain," of the poem, "Deserted
Village" by Oliver Goldsmith. |
